Bug Description

Running ogr2ogr tool results in error
ERROR 6: Unable to load PROJ.4 library (libproj.so)

The bug has been discussed in
http://groups.google.com/group/geodjango/browse_thread/thread/8f2ba5a3240214d3/ab6dbe17b4bd1528?pli=1

and the
 sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libproj.so.0 /usr/lib/libproj.so

is a valid workaround

Can you provide more info on the version of gdal and ubuntu you are using?
Ubuntu version:
lsb_release -a
gdal installed version:
apt-cache show gdal-bin (just posting the version is enough)

This bug was fixed in debian before.

Yes, of course.

$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.

Straight install using synaptic.

Given the fix in debian, this bug only affects lucid. It is solved in subsequent releases.
