Bug Description

I did all the available updates before launching update-manager -d . There are no errors in

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install -f

...
The dist-update reports

E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.

I can't find any held packages. I've uninstalled Opera and disabled it from the list of apt sources.

Jean-Baptiste,

I noticed some errors in the logs regarding vnc-e. I went looking into my history of installs, and sometime mid-2009 I installed the VNC Enterprise viewer by download the deb from realvnc.com (vnc-e_4.5_i386.deb).

However, this laptop has survived a few dist-upgrades since then (most recently in May for Natty).

I don't believe it's installed anymore. I tried finding it in synaptic but can't see it. Running apt-get isn't returning anything either:

$ sudo apt-get -s remove vnc-e
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package vnc-e is not installed, so not removed
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  linux-headers-2.6.38-8 linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Thanks!

Thanks for the logs

Could you try to remove gcj-4.4-base, gcj-4.4-jre-headless, libgcj10 and libgcj-common and tell if it works around the upgrade issue. Note that it may also remove software dependant of these packages, so do it only if you don't absolutely need them.

This is likely a duplicate of bug 853688

Doesn't look like I have any software left that depends on these libraries... so maybe it was needed by something in the past but not currently . . .

In any case that appears to have fixed the problem. The dist-upgrade has gotten further along in the GUI, with the typical prompt prior to upgrade. You guys are amazingly fast with problem analysis. :D (I checked out bug 853688 and saw that a fix was committed about 2 hours ago. Does that mean that this shouldn't affect systems when the RC comes out tomorrow?)

Thanks a bunch!
