update won't redirect "301 moved premanently" the way it should.

Bug Description

This problem seems to happen after installing things with Automatix. Perhaps when automatix updates the repository lists something unexpected happens because (I believe) that requests that return a 301 error should be redirected to something else. I don't know for sure though I think that I read that somewhere. Anyway, I hope that this helps.

The problem just didn't happen before Automatix was installed and used. (never tried automatix before and I think it's pretty cool!)

Thanks for all the work!!! I really enjoy using Ubuntu and think that it easily surpasses other distros in quality and community. I hope that I have helped you by trying to report every bug that I come across.

Sincerely,

Starmaker

You've installed automatix. Unfortunately, there have been many reports of automatix causeing upgrade problems. Ubuntu can't support upgrades after installing 3rd party software such as this. You should discuss this with Automatix.

Reopening, that fact that apt does not do 301 redirects is unreleated to automatix.

Possible regression- this started happening with Ibex Alpha 3. NO Automatix.

Just to clarify- this was a brand new install of Ibex Alpha 3 from distribution CD. After one round of updates- started getting almost everything "redirected" but Apt isn't picking them up. Now I can't update or install much of anything. I had the same problem on the same machine earlier with Alpha 2. It's a test machine, so I wiped it and installed Alpha 3 to see if the problem came up again.

The apt http client has never supported 301 so far. If that happend after a fresh install, then there is something wrong with the mirror.
