Bug Description

I wanted to try Natty from an USB stick. The purple screen at the beginning displayed correctly, then the laptop screen went blank. Some seconds later I heard the startup sound, but the screen was still black. Holding the laptop in an angle, I can notice there is something being displayed on the screen, such as the panel, and I can even open dialog boxes by clicking at random, but they look only as faint darker spots on the screen. It seems to me that the screen brightness is set to minimum, but the brightness controls won't work. The problem persists in Oneiric Beta 2.

No display problems with Maverick.

I have a PackardBell Butterfly XS

I made lspci | grep VGA in the terminal and got this:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

I ran the Oneiric LiveCD on an HP 6735 AMD Sempron laptop on which Maverick was working well, and I got a dim screen. Impossible to turn screen brighter.

These video problems don't seem to be a distribution-specific bug but a regression in the Linux kernel since they affect more than one distribution and are affecting system configurations that used to work well under previous releases of those distributions. A report should be pushed up to kernel maintainers.

Same problem on Xubuntu 11.10. Live-CD didn't show any graphics, so I installed with the alternate CD, hoping for additional drivers. Installation and boot went well. Since it's a dual boot, Grub show up. But when I reached the log in screen the brightness was set to minimum and I couldn't change it.

My computer is a new HP Pavilion G6 Notebook PC with Sandy Bridge.

Is this the same bug as bug #818830 ?
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/818830

I solved it in Oneiric by marking acpi=off in the startup menu (F6), but then I can't connect to wifi.

Nelson Álvarez Sáez, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

If reproducible, could you also please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc7

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
