Bug Description

Instead of having three separate icons for writer, calc and presentation in launcher there could be one icon that starts libreoffice with its start screen. Then the user can choose which application to start.

zerwas, thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 864057
When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs. As well, could you please attach a screenshot demonstrating this problem?

Thanks for your reply, Matthew. Because i was confused by his answer I talked to Christopher on IRC explaining that this is about a feature request / design issue but he repeated his request that i should use apport.

Anyway, thanks for re-opening the bug report. This issue has also been mentioned on the "libreoffice-design" mailing list: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/design/msg00357.html

Matthew Paul Thomas (mpt), I beg your pardon but I read this bug very closely. The requests I made were intentional and helpful in moving this bug forward. Marking back to Incomplete until the requests in comment #1 are fulfilled.

How would some logs from his system help this bug when this is a bug asking about a change in the *default* launcher configuration?

For the most part this is an Unity issue, not an LibreOffice one as the icons are more important for unity and its consistency (e.g. also for icons already started and in the dash). Please leave this as "incomplete" or even expired in "Libreoffice (Ubuntu)" as long as there is no dicision from Unity and its team.
Alternatively open a bug as per http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport and add it via "Also affects project" and discuss the issue upstream.

Why is libreoffice added as affects, It would be quite simple to change this in Unity.

This.

I believe these workarounds to treat LibreOffice as several seperate applications on the Unity launch bar are causing problems like the one seen here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/896608

Please guys, get your design decision done quickly - if 12.04 LTS launches with these problems it really is game over (especially for the Business Edition remix).

Also there's still no global menu in 12.04 daily build either (yes i know it's off topic to this bug, but it does affect LibreOffice / Design Team as without it HUD doesn't work)...personally i'm quite happy at this, but then hopefully global menu will be easily turned on / off by the user

Also see here for my comments on consistency with behaviour of LibreOffice on the 'other two' platforms (how their launchers and windowing systems treat the application - yes, singular!):

I agree with this request. It would be better if the white LibreOffice icon (the one which launches the Start Center) is added to the Launcher instead of three individual icons. This icon would have a quicklist to launch individual LibreOffice components to quicker access. Doing this change would lessen the annoying bug #1054167.

BTW, John forgot to include an explanation to mark this bug as "Opinion" ;-)
