desktop background is offset several hundred pixels

Bug Description
This may be unity or gtk related, don't really know yet. The desktop is offset about 300 pixels to the left and about 100 from the top of the screen, other erratic display in the offset area.

This behaviour is not occurring under unity-2d... which for the sake of sanity I have retreated to for the moment.
