Bug Description
I'm using version 2.6.9 and whenever I need to close the program, in the middle of a download, I always get a "cheking" forever status when I restart the program in a new session. That sometimes happens when I just add a new torrent. I cant leave the program opened for a very long time, in order to see if it'll start to download at some point. But, no. It doesn't. I use Ubuntu 11.04.

I think you should switch to a more recent qBittorrent version(currently 2.8.5) and report back...
Maybe use a ppa?
