I don't know if it's relevant, but this happened after I ran apt-xapian-index manually to see if it would help with the problem I've been having with Synaptic Package Manager since upgrading to Oneiric Beta: the quick search feature in Synaptic no longer workers. I often cannot find a package by typing its exact name into the quick search field, even though I can find the package by scrolling down the list alphabetically while the quick search box is empty.
