Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-mount

If I freshly insert a USB pendrive then without doing anything, ask for it to be unmount (via any of the GUI methods), I do not get a notification from libnotify that it is safe to remove the pendrive.

However, if I insert it, copy some files, then unmount, I get very nice "data writing in progress", then "safe to remove" popups.

If it was by design to suppress the safe-to-remove notification when there is no data written then please reconsider -- the user should receive notification when it's safe to remove a pendrive, no matter how soon that may be :)

Interestingly enough, using gnome-mount and gnome-volume-manager under Xfce results in the notifications always being displayed - which I presume is intended (and indeed seems sensible).

It only displays the "Don't remove yet"/"Now safe to remove" notification pair if there is a significant amount of data to be written back. If not, then the first notification would go very fast and thus would be confusing.

I think the current behaviour is fine, but I set this to needinfo to wait for your comment. Thank you!

I think it makes sense to suppress "Don't remove yet" on insignificant amount of data but regardless the final "Safe to remove" message should always be shown to the user as reassurement.

Messages from gnome-mount always show up on the bottom right of the display, cut and all.

I'm using Natty Narwhal and it looks like only randomly I receive the "safe to remove" notification.

People coming from Windows are used to receiving this information every time they ask for a USB drive to be removed. Lots of people are often puzzled after I remove their flash drives from my computer and the notification doesn't show up, and most of them think I took it out without safely removing it.

Is there any config we can do to always display the notification?

If this is a design decision, it should be reviewed.

In Unity 5.12.0, when we mount a flash drive and then we eject it from its launcher quicklist we always get this message, so I think this bug can be marked as fixed in Ubuntu 12.04.
