Sorry, I did a grep through d-i source and that was as close as
I could get. Anyway, base-config version is 2.29.

Did I say base-config? Hmm, I meant base-installer.
But it seems it's prebaseconfig

prebaseconfig creates
/media/cdrom -> /media/cdrom0
which exists.
But the directories
/media/cdrom[01]
are missing.
So maybe not prebaseconfig? That's why I was thinking partconf -- it
creates the fstab, which seems to be the logical place to make mount
points for these... partman has nothing to do with CDROMs.
Cheers,

It seems unlikely that you're even using partconf at all. It's only in
use on certain architectures, and I thought you were on i386.

Sorry for the late reply. It seems to mee that discover1 is the culprit
and it probably deleted the directories created in prebaseconfig.
Please send the output of "discover --device cdrom" on this machine. It
should contain the path to your cdrom device.

Please consider applying this patch for all the /media/cdrom bugs. More
keep coming in every day, I've added this to my release blockers for rc1
list and would prefer to see it fixed by tc1.
As bast I can tell, the bug occurs when discover does not detect that a
device is a CD (or fails to detect the device, I don't know which), and
yet the CD is in fact usable by the kernel.
I don't think we need this automangling of mount points at all in Debian.
Maybe it was right for progeny, but not for us.

I changed the default of the debconf question to false. I agree that
this is a good thing idependent of this bug. I did not close these bugs
in the changelog, because I think that this is not really a fix for
these bugs. The bugs will not go away once this change is uploaded and
if someone chooses to manage cdrom mountpoints with discover, they will
reappear. I'd like to find the real cause for this bug. I however agree,
that these bugs are no longer rc, once the default is changed.
One thing I'm not sure about is the urgency of this upload. By itself
the change is minimal, but if we upload with high urgency this will also
override the waiting period in unstable of the changes made in discover
1.7.0. I'm pretty confident that discover 1.7.0 works, but you never
know ...
So I leave this decision to whoever wants to sponsor this upload.

It seems that you upgraded to discover 2.0.4 in the meantime. This bug
is only present on some systems which use the old discover1 package. The
newer version does not manage mount points at all. You can either
install discover1 and I will try to find out why discover does not
detect your cdrom device or if you don't have the time to do this I will
have to close this bug report.
If you install discover1 could you please also tell me which kind of
cdrom you use and the device node of this device. The command "discover
--device cdrom" should output this device node.
Thanks Gaudenz
P.S.: d-i still uses (and will use for the sarge release) discover1. By
default it installs discover1 on new installs. The reason for this is
that the new version of discover became stable enough to late for the
sarge release to migrate d-i to a new hardware detection system.

With the upload of discover 1.7.1 the default is not to mangle with

Hello.
Just to add some info to this bug - when I'm using the 2.6.8 kernel
(from the distribution, kernel-
versions break the APM on my laptop) I'm missing /media/cdrom0, thus
I am unable to mount the CD-ROM on my IBM ThinkPad R31 laptop.
But when I'm booting with the 2.6.7 kernel (again, it's the packaged
kernel-
both mounting and automounting (via gnome-volume-
without a glitch.
I'm not sure how the 2.6.8 kernels later than -2 behave (I can't upgrade
to one of them and check it as I lost the .deb for 2.6.8-2 and wouldn't
be able to revert back to -2 if the APM is still broken).
