Tony,

Is your system up-to-date? I tried the same commands that you used and it both installed and worked on my system. (same configuration as yours)

I had to resolve it by doing a "complete removal" in Synaptic first and then installing again.
That sorted the issue.

I guess something was lost in the upgrade but the full package seems to be fine now.
Perhaps an issue for those who will perform an in-place update from Natty?

I have this issue as well. It works after installing but after reboot error appears again. So I have to purge likewise-open and reinstall it to make Likewise work.
Version of likewise-open is 6.1.0.406-0ubuntu4. System is up to date (2011-10-13: )
What else can I provide to help detecting the problem?

I have the same issue. In my case the issue is that the likewise service isn't starting on boot. If you drop to the a tty console (CTRL-ALT+F2) for tty2 and sign on with your local account and start the service: (username@hostname:~$ sudo service likewise start) and enter your local username's password.

Once the service is started; jump back to your X session with (CTRL-ALT+F7). Now you should be able to log on with your domain credentials without an error.
