Bug Description

Steps to reproduce:
Install PlayOnLinux in any of the currently supported versions of Ubuntu Linux including the currently in beta 11.10. The version installed will be <= 3.8.X.

Try to install any application trough PlayOnLinux. PlayOnLinux will return the message that PlayOnLinux version 4 and under are no longer supported and will stop there. The result being that PlayOnLinux on all currently supported releases of Ubuntu are utterly useless.

Packages in atleast Ubuntu 11.10 must be updated to version 4.0 and above, otherwise the shipped version will be unusable.

I confirm, this is due that all script are on-line for bugfixe, support new applications/games/etc... when we add some new function in the core this make on-line script unusable if version didn't match (function doesn't exist). So to prevent problems and unwanted bugs we are blocking the use of older release.

You must use our repository which contain the last release of PlayOnLinux.

Are you working on pushing version 4 into Debian Unstable so that it can be pulled into Ubuntu 11.10?

No, we provide package and repository some distribution but we haven't enough time to push PlayOnLinux on all distribution.
I've added Beberking to this bug since he seems to be the guys who push PlayOnLinux on Debian.

As the current version does not work at all, FFE for upgrade to 4.0 trivially approved. Please go ahead.

Hi,

First of all I want to say how ridiculous and short minded it is to
deliberately break all previous versions of PlayOnLinux, without
thinking at least a sec about consequences in distributions. I mean,
guys, you are not in beta anymore, what would you say if all firefox
versions below 6 couldn't browse anymore ? All you'll earn is poor
downstream reputation and probably a fork from a user who decided he had
enough of this centralized architecture.

I am currently the Debian maintainer of the playonlinux package, so I
prepared a package for 4.0.12 (trying to follow the 12 new versions
published without notice). It is waiting for a sponsor to enter Debian.
You are welcome to use it if you want to upload it to Ubuntu directly:
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/contrib/p/playonlinux/playonlinux_4.0.12-1.dsc

That said, I am not sure I'll keep being the Debian maintainer of
playonlinux for long.

Bertrand

As Aymeric explained, we have no choice, because the scripts are always updated, and PlayOnLinux 3.0 is just unable to run v4 scripts.

We needed to completely remake the structure of scripts to make 64 bits wine versions compatible. (Because a 32bits prefixes and 64bits prefixes are not compatible)

@ Bertrand, the problem is the same with every software. If MSN change their server, pidgin won't be compatible anymore.

What do you expect us to do ?

If you have a more clever solution, I'm interested

And also, I want to say that I thought about making two script repositories : One for POL3, and one for POL4, but wine is evolving, every two weeks there is a new version, and it can break scripts. Consequently, we need to update them.

It's just impossible for us to manage two differents versions

Rovanion (rovanion-luckey) wrote :

You could have kept the POL3 repository online, although unmaintained, to avoid breaking about every single installation of PlayOnLinux out there. I assume that most of the scripts for POL3 worked and would not stop doing so even though newer updated versions of the scripts are released afterwards.

Good, I everybody wants that, that's what I will do. From now, v3 repository is open.

But PlayOnLinux won't support v3 scripts

Very sorry

Ok it's done. I've imported the last backup of v3 scripts. It should work

Up!
Is it possible to see version 4.0.14 (or upper) in the Ubuntu Precise?
Version in Precise is 3.8.8, this version have more than 1y and as said before is no longer supported...
Thanks in advance.

This bug was fixed in the package playonlinux - 4.0.14-1

  * Refresh patches/x-terminal-emulator.diff.

playonlinux (4.0.12-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release (Closes: #639558).
  * Remove patches/license.diff, not necessary any more.
  * debian/rules: remove permission fixing.
  * debian/rules: add build-arch and build-indep.
  * Migrate to dh_python2.
  * debian/patches: disable update alert on new release
    (Closes: #639463).

playonlinux (3.8.12-1) UNRELEASED; urgency=low

  * New upstream release.
  * Add depends on gnupg, POL uses signed scripts now.
  * Delete patches/bang.diff, not necessary any more.
  * Refresh patches.
  * Disable completely playonlinux-daemon, as it is *partially* removed
    upstream.
  * Disable playonlinux-url_handler since upstream doesn't provide gconf
    schemas. Upstream should definitly think about providing a clean and
    complete tarball.
  * Add the plugins directory, to make them available easily.
  * Depends on icoutils as POL uses it now.
  * Bump Standards-Version to 3.9.2 (no changes needed).
