Sorry for not commenting anything in the first description but after the crash unity, top panel and all window decorations were gone and I was not able to type anything. Copy and paste worked so I copied the first bit of text I could find to allow bug report save.

This bug happened together with bug #797572

What I did: Login after reboot and waited a minute or so.

BTW: Problem occurs also when logging into LXDE rather than into unity (not sure if that information helps).

Hmm, this might be just a dupe of bug #828684 and just coincidental that you got both issues at the same time, however in case not this may be worth some further investigation.

First thing though --- are you able to reproduce this bug reliably? If so, we can try to narrow it down more. If not, maybe we should just dupe to bug #828684.

Had it again now on reboot after applying all current updates.

Yes, it is reproducable. Happens pretty reliably a minute after logon. I did not touch mouse or keyboard during this time.
Trying it a few times once I had a real lockup while trying to get back to this bug report to post this comment.

And one time (while rebooting) after logon Unity menu on the left was missing either and on the top I had the menu of network-manager. But that happened just once - just mention it for the case you are interested in several side effects.

Still reproducable with all latest updates about a minute after logon.

Ok, well the instances where the crash reporter pops up a minute after boot but the system is otherwise usable, is going to just be another instance of #828684. The crash handler is going to be turned off for oneiric within the next week or so, and that will essentially be the end of that. (Hopefully we can suppress the notice better in P*).

However, the case where the system does lock up solid is more interesting. Next time you're able to reproduce that, please ssh into the box and collect the output of `dmesg` and your /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state file, and post to this bug. We'll focus this report on that particular issue.

Thanks for noting about the unity menu; you're right it's probably just a side effect (or possibly even unrelated) but worth mentioning. Every detail can help.
