Bug Description
Ubuntu-linux (warty warthog): I do a vanilla install - I get asked neither for a root password
nor which software packages I want to install. Instead, it installs everything (took all
night, slow box), and leaves me locked out of my own box.
It does allow me to specify a user.
Could be a blonde moment, but I did it twice, the second time passing "custom-expert" to the
installer.

Ubuntu does not set a root password by default. The initial user you create is
given the ability to gain root privileges using the 'sudo' command. See:

The fact that we install a default set of packages is a deliberate design
decision; we provide a sensible desktop out of the box without you having to
wade through thousands of packages deciding what to install. The 'custom'
installation method is there in case you don't want to do this.
