cannot set default keyboard layout for unity-greeter

I use a dvorak layout so I am used to typing my password in this layout.
I cannot set the dvorak layout as default for the unity greeter

I'm also affected by this issue.

This is especially annoying because the greeter doesn't even seem to respect the same default layout as gnome's.

I regularly switch between two keyboard layouts, and both gnome and the greeter used to have the same default. Then I changed the default layout in gnome, but it didn't change in the greeter. Because of bug #834487, one cannot see which layout is currently being used when entering one's password, which makes this situation really bad in terms of usability.

It seems unity-greeter is using the same layout as set in X…

So you can try to put the right XkbLayout and XkbVariant directives in an InputDevice section of your xorg.conf
