Bug Description
It's a very tough thing to do well, but sounds need to sound phat (rawk!) but
also be sufficiently compressed to play well on shitty audio hardware, such as
the speakers attached to most computers and laptops. The current sounds lean too
far towards phat.

I'm really not sure what you are referring to. The current sounds play great on
my T42 (it doesn't get any worse than a .75" tweater, yes mono), a set of $10
creative labs (crap) speakers, my wife's PB17, and a set of Yamaha MSP10's
(professional studio monitors). On crappy speakers the lower tones will drop
out. I used nothing less than C3 (which starts subwoofer range), and anything
below C4 is just an octave of the next note, so you will still receive the
overtones. Nothing goes abve C6. That means all the sounds are within a 2
octave range (well able to be reproduce on crappy audio gear). The small single
hit sounds are all in mono (don't need to be stereo for such a short duration).
Startup and shutdown sounds are in stereo, but a simple delay offset. That way
they will play on mono (both mixed and single channel) and on stereo.
