Subject: kernel-image-2.6.8: CONFIG_PCI_MSI should NOT be enabled!

Package: kernel-image-2.6.8-1-k7
Version: 2.6.8-3
Severity: serious

Between 2.6.7 and 2.6.8 the CONFIG_PCI_MSI config option was enabled it
was previously called CONFIG_PCI_USE_VECTOR for reference. This is
normally defaulted off and suggests to be turned off as well. It causes
some systems including my laptop to no longer work at all under linux
since it changes how interrupt routing works. Also on lkml there are
threads suggesting not all drivers even work properly with MSI.

This bug also affects both pure64 (amd64) and Ubuntu linux kernels,
since both are derived from the official Debian ones.

Chris

You reported this bug (both in bugzilla and Debian) against
"kernel-image-2.6.8-1-k7"; we have no such package in Ubuntu, so please confirm
whether you experienced the problem with an Ubuntu kernel, and if so, precisely
which one.

The one on the warty install iso for amd64. I looked through the component list and didn't see any for amd64 arch at all so
just selected what looked like a reasonable wrong one.

As I mentioned on irc, please provide a boot log (or thread of reasons
why MSI should be disabled). Without it, I have no proof that MSI is
actually causing any harm (nor any way to figure out how it may be
causing harm, and actually fix the problem, instead of blindly disabling
it).

For future reference, ubuntu is disabling MSI for this reason:

I'll raise severity if I see proof that PCI_MSI is somehow wreaking
havoc upon the general debian populace.

I thought I mentioned before but I don't see it in the thread, Fedora Core 3 Test 2 amd64 works fine on this laptop with
CONFIG_PCI_MSI. Tonight I tried to install Ubuntu again with the newer netinstall mini.iso that has CONFIG_PCI_MSI disabled
(-3) and now installation works fine. I am currently in the second stage of the installer downloading all the debs. I will
try to track down what the exact difference is between the Fedora Core 3 Test 2 kernel and the Ubuntu kernel which causes
the problem.
