AIXGL ATI Mobility Radeon X700 freezes with glxgears, glxinfo reports no rendering, radeon driver used

Bug Description

LiveCD reports rendering yes on glxinfo and glxgears works fine.
When I upgraded to Feisty, it was using fglx driver. I followed instructions to completely remove fglrx drivers, and using AIGLX instead.
When running glxinfo it shows:

display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: No
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.2

glxgears will crash the system.

Pretty sure. xorg-fglrx package, restricted modules, and also an entry in /etc/profiles refered to fglrx (sorry don't remember exactly, I read it somewhere)

Well the radeon driver support for cards > 9200 is highly (as said in the logs) experimental. It barely works for my mobility 9700. I suggest you to use the fglrx driver instead.

If you really want to use compiz like window manager, I suggest you to try XGL.

One last question to be sure.. what gives you : LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo ?

I attache the glxinfo output, but looks nothing relevant.
I know radeon driver is experimental, but, cannot run xgl on feisty due ATI propietary does not support composite in last releases (8.33 I think).
So, for now, only AIGLX is possible.
I have tested with liveCD, running same config, ndiswrapper with no acpi problems, radeon driver, beryl running, and runs.... incredibly well, much better with kernel 2.6.20, thats why I wanted to check that.
I am pretty sure is a problem with fglrx package removal. When I removed it, aptitude crashed with the purge.
I removed all /usr/lib/liGL*.so so.1 etc... and reinstalled all libgl mesa packages... but... nothing solved.
I wonder what I am missing. That why I suspect is somthing related with the 8.33 xorg-driver-fglrx package...

Any ideas?

The support is not really experimental anymore, it works quite fine with most Radeon 9500 - X800 cards (not the top performance of course, but otherwise). The "experimental"-tag was recently removed from the development version, as it was basically forgotten there even though most important bugs have been fixed.

My guess would be that the fglrx still wasn't removed properly - installing fglrx breaks the open source 3D acceleration completely, but that dpkg-divert should tell you perhaps something. Try also reinstalling the package libgl1-mesa-glx.

As a last resort, you could try running http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/feisty/herd-4/ live cd, 3D should work out-of-the-box, though probably you are still going to hit the auto-detection problem of mobility x700, ie. that you have to specify "radeon" driver... possibly going to be fixed soon in daily images.

Hi.
Debugging on glxinfo showed a problem of file r300dri.so missing on the specified path. So then, I just located the file a copied to the correct location: cp /usr/lib/dri/r300_dri.so /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/
Now glxinfo shows direct rendering yes. Great! but... if I run glxgears CPU goes 100%. Also beryl will produce heavy load.
I will check more testing with xorg.conf.
Anyway, I attache xorg.log if gives any clue.

I tested that performance problem happends either i386 and amd64 live CDs. I found this post: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-295052.html, regarding problems with problem fixed on 7.2 xorg version. Anyway I am running amd64 and testing package is only available for i386.
Do you know if there will be an available package for amd64?

Timo, regarding your comment about ATI model autodetection, I my case works fine. I have got "ati" on xorg.conf, but radeon is loaded properly.

BTW, that ati/radeon "auto-detection" problem was not on the X700 cards, but they had the MonitorLayout problem (both issues fixed in 7.04).

This may or may not be a different bug.

I use an X300, with dual head (merged fb mode) and AIGLX. Everything works fine under KWin, including glxgears and glxinfo reports direct rendering.

However, when using beryl, the X server freezes after some random interval (always within 2-3 minutes). The mouse is usually still movable, but the keyboard is unresponsive, and X will not terminate when told to when I ssh in from another machine. The only way to recover is to reboot from the external machine.

Occasionally the X server appears to crash and restart, after which the keyboard is again responsive, but X is still consuming the entire CPU and the system is extremely sluggish until I reboot.

After trying many different options, I eventually found that by changing colour depth down to 16 bits resolves the problem. I have been using beryl for several hours now with no further issues.

Joe, please file a new bug, since you have "direct rendering" reported by glxinfo. The original problem in this bug report seems to be fixed or was due to an fglrx installation.
