Bug Description

In the settings window, in the "Screen" preferences, there are very few options, and even they don't seem to work. :-) One of them is the "Lock screen after" option where you can select a delay before the screen is locked and required a password to regain access.

I have this set to 1 hour.

But that setting is ignored. I haven't pinned down exactly how long it actually waits for; it isn't immediately after screen turn off, but it's only a few minutes longer, I think - and probably the default, whatever that was.

Thank you for your bug report, what value do you have for the dim screen option? is the screen locked after a time corresponding to both values added?

The "Turn off after" option is set to 10 minutes. And the screen does
seem to turn off after that time, or as near that I've not noticed it
doing otherwise.

At some unmeasured time after that (but way, way less than an hour)
waking it again requires the password.

I see no "dim screen" option anywhere in System Settings. (My default
language for menus and windows, in Language Support, is English (United
Kingdom) followed by English...)

I may need more specific instructions on how to do that.

When i tried it using logical-to-me means, it just respawned; before
noticing that I ran it from the commandline with --debug, it did some
stuff (log included below fwiw) and then exited.

Basically I did:

killall gnome-settings-daemon

That did kill that process, but I failed to noticed immediately that
another one of the same name (but different PID) had started up.

Then I ran

/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon --debug

And got this output (which I suspect isn't relevant):

you can try this:

- edit /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-settings-daemon.desktop
- change
"Exec=/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon"
with
"Exec=/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon --debug"
- restart your session, get the issue you described and attach .xsession-errors to the bug

As attached. Did changed, logged out, logged in, started tailing the .xsession-errors file for my own amusement, then left machine alone at 13:17.

Nearly forgot about it too long! but not quite. At 14:00 woke it up, and had to enter the password.

(Copied file to new file for upload before launching mail and web clients. Hence different filename.)

As log file doesn't show timestamps for the entries after wake-up, making sure to send this before that hour is up. :-)

NB: the last line in the log before the screen dimmed was:

** (deja-dup-monitor:4532): DEBUG: monitor.vala:221: Automatic backups disabled. Not scheduling a backup.

As no timestamps on the following gnome-settings-daemon entries, and screen was black, I don't know when they happened! :-)

Thanks, Pedro could you send that upstream with the xsession-errors log and see if they need something else?
