Bug Description

This came after fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 beta1
I'm up to date and even tried daily build of vlc from ppa:videolan/master-daily
When I try to open preferences or messages windows the whole system become unresponsible. I can move mouse but, but I'm even not able to change the terminal with Crtl+Alt+F[1,2...]. The only way is to power off the hardware.
The first moment I see the border of the opening window and it goes over the screen (to the right). I can't make a screenshot, but it's just a sandart window board.

You have reported a bug against a non-Ubuntu version of VLC. Does this also affect the official Ubuntu VLC (i.e. 1.1.11-2build2)?

Changed in vlc (Ubuntu):

Since you've answered so quickly, here is the whole story.
Every time I complitely remove vlc via synaptic (and manuly remove all the configs and cache from home directory) and make fresh install the first time I have preferences window opens normaly, the secong time it will not open (rebooting doesn't metter)

Here what I have when I start vlc:

VLC media player 1.1.11 The Luggage (revision exported)
[0x13d0930] main interface: creating httpd
Blocked: call to unsetenv("DBUS_ACTIVATION_ADDRESS")
Blocked: call to unsetenv("DBUS_ACTIVATION_BUS_TYPE")
[0x12cf120] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
Blocked: call to setlocale(6, "")
Blocked: call to setlocale(6, "")

(process:2046): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
 Using the fallback 'C' locale.

(vlc:2046): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "pixmap",

(vlc:2046): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "pixmap",

And I took a picture on my phone of what it says when it hangs up:
vlc:1987): Gtk-CRITICAL ** : IA__gtk_widget_style_get: assertion `GTK_IS_WIDGET widget)' faild
something like that, and it seems that it writes it million times.

Also, I can hear my HD working hard, so it must be swapping.
