Bug Description

This might be related to bug #525038. When starting up, the screen goes black (actually it looks like the backlight is not on) either instantly when plymouth starts or a few seconds after. The login screen appears, I typed my password and the screen is still black after logging in.

However, if I press F2 (decrease brightness) or F3 (increase brightness), not Fn + F2 or F3, then the display will come back on instantly. If I increase the brightness to its maximum setting and then decrease the brightness to the minimum setting using F2 & F3 respectively, I get the same effect when plymouth starts (no backlight).

The brightness indicator that ubuntu shows when adjusting the brightness gives me only four levels going from 100% to 0%:
0 = 100% Brightness
1 = 60% Brightness
2 = 15% Brightness
3 = No backlight;

and 3 levels when going from 0% to 100%
0 = 40%
1 = 80%
2 = 100%

That's all the info I can give for now. If I wanted to get the Fn key working what package would I report that against?

Thanks

Using the xbacklight tool the actual values for 0-100% is actually 0%, 20%, 60% & 100%. It seems the current value of the backlight is not being stored when shutting down and on reboot has a value of 0%.

Do you think you can run the same script (fixbacklight.sh) as discussed in Bug #875831 during start up using start up applications?

Hey octoquad,

Hi, thanks for reporting this issue during the development period of
Ubuntu.

I notice there's not been further comments to the bug report since the
release came out, would you mind updating us on the status of it in the
release?

Are you still able to reproduce the issue? If not, do you think the bug
report can be closed, or do you think we should continue tracking it?

Hi Bryce,

This issue still persists as of today. I will re-install with the recent ISO to see if the issue can be resolved. Probably something went wrong from Beta -> Beta 2 -> Release.

Hi Bryce,

After a re-installation the problem still persists (all updates applied). How can we get this resolved?

The issue doesn't seem likely to be a gsd one, does it happen in non gnome sessions? what login manager do you use?

Hi Sebastien,

It looks like the plymouth portion is not invalid anymore, as soon as lightdm starts the backlight switches off. Current version of lightdm is lightdm_1.0.6-0ubuntu1.1_amd64.deb. I have attached the most recent logs for lightdm. In x-0-greeter.log there are a few errors and warnings which might possibly related.

Found the problem.

When booting up the default value of /sys/class/backlight/acpi_vidoe0/brightness is 0. I have updated my /etc/rc.local and have added the following line before exit 0:

echo 5 > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness.

Restarted, and it works :)

Not to sure if this is a bug really, or hardware specific, so please feel free to close or update the relevant packages.
