Bug Description

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 for a colleague and noticed that when trying to toggle wireless on and off using Fn, ubuntu does not recognise the button and simply ignores enabling or disabling wireless. The only way to enable/disable wireless on this device is to manually select Enable/Disable Wireless Networking from network manager.

Unfortunately, I cannot supply device information (lspci, dmesg etc) at this time, but if you do require information, please let me know so I can get it and post it here.

Thanks

@Bruce: Thanks a lot. And can you give us an update on this issue? What happens under Ubuntu 12.04?

Bruce Pieterse (octoquad) wrote : Re: Unable to detect hardware switch on Samsung RV510 -- Broadcom

Hi,

I have upgraded the distro to 12.04. Unfortunately the error persists. I can see that it gives a not found message and I couldn't find that package with apt-get. I'm assuming that nl80211 is a kernel module then?

I have also noticed that the brightness does not work with the Fn key. The osd-notify gives visual feedback that the brightness is being changed but the LCD brightness remains the same. I will probably file another bug for this. Which package should I report this against using ubuntu-bug?

Thanks

This is a mix of issues at the kernel level (for the killswitch) and possibly in gnome-settings-daemon for the brightness keys. You should file another bug about brightness keys if possible; against 'gnome-settings-daemon'

affects: network-manager (Ubuntu) → linux (Ubuntu)

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 854065

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.5kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Another thing you could try is load the samsung_laptop module:

sudo modprobe samsung_laptop

But it would be good to know if this is fixed in v3.5-rc7

I managed to get the laptop today and have installed the 3.6.0, 3.6.3 and 3.7.0-rc2 mainline kernels with the following results:

3.6.0
- Hardware Wireless light is on
- No wireless option under network manager
- No wlan0 adapter in ifconfig

3.6.3
- Same as above

3.7.0-rc2
- Same as above

However I did notice the following line when installing the 3.6.0 kernel:
ERROR (dkms apport): kernel package linux-headers-3.6.0-030600-generic is not supported
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.6.0-030600-generic (x86_64)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/bcmwl/5.100.82.38+bdcom/build/make.log for more information.

In make.log the following is shown:
/var/lib/dkms/bcmwl/5.100.82.38+bdcom/build/src/wl/sys/wl_linux.c:43:24: fatal error: asm/system.h: No such file or directory

So it seems that the C header file asm/system.h is not present for all three of the mainline kernels.

I have attached the output from dpkg and make for all installs.
