Bug Description

Is there a [real] reason to ship outdated xvncviewer in 'main', when there is a new version (xvnc4viewer) in 'universe'?

If it's just for backward compatibility (as described in packages's description), we could leave the older version on universe.

Can you do an 'exchange' ? New version get in main, old version get in universe.

Confirming, vnc should just be removed entirely, and vnc4 should be promoted to main. This needs UVF exception from Tollef ATM, though.

Changed in vnc4:
status: Unconfirmed → Confirmed

This sounds fine with me, after beta.

Joe Baker (joebaker) wrote : I prefer RealVNC (vnc4)

Here at a small manufacturing firm, we are trying to migrate to Linux. The remaining Windows desktops have access to a Linux desktop via each user's own personal VNC Server account on the Linux machines. I've found that the RealVNC Server outperforms the TightVNC server in my experience. I discovered it when running RealVNC rpms from FedoraCore on my Mandriva LTSP server. Since moving to Ubuntu I'm quite happy that RealVNC Server is integrated into Ubuntu although bug#78282 is concerning. I have a Feisty install at home and I can try to see what could be done to get vnc4server to work on it.

I am in favor of seeing RealVNC moved to becoming the default program for vncserver and vnviewer. It's a solid program. Something to watch out for though in all the VNC Server products is keymapping. Test the numeric keypad, ctrl-z (undo) for proper functions from several vnc clients.

vnc4 has been promoted to main and I changed the seeds; this still needs -meta uploads to be completely fixed, will do them in a bit.

By the way, i'm developing a VNC client for the GNOME desktop that hopefully will get in 2.20, as part of vino package.

Owch; I wish I had seen this earlier. I do not recommend vnc4 being in main; the vnc4 package is not well maintained.
