Thanks for your bugreport.
It looks like g-a-i has a memory leaak on re-opening the cache. The ProcMaps show a bunch of: apt/pkgcache. bin (deleted) apt/pkgcache. bin (deleted)

that memory seems to get not returned for some reason.
