Bug Description

After the last update of grub-pc under oneiric beta, I could not reboot and fell under grub rescue mode.
The only accessible disc under grub rescue 'ls' was (hd0), claimed to be of 'unknown filesystem'. A reboot under a natty
rescue disc shows that all disk partitions are fine and SATA raid partitions can be mounted. After a chroot,
update-grub did not help. addind raid and mdraid09 in the PRELOAD modules did not either.

The problem still exists in the official release of Ubuntu 11.10.

I find this workaround works for me.

Reinstall GRUB with

sudo grub-install --module="part_msdos" --root-directory=(your_mount) (your_dev_file)

It's able to reboot now.

To make it easier for later kernel updates, just put part_msdos into grub-install line "modules="

This bug is still there... in Precise Pangolin and in the beta1 of Quantal Quetzal.

Can you post the results of the following command:

sudo grub-probe -t partmap /

Also could you download and run this script and post the results:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/

Yes, of course. Here is the output of

gpt

And the results of running bootinfoscript are attached below.

Please note the the workaround of Liny works fine, adding the part_msdos module does save me (despite the expected gpt partition table - I'm running on en EFI/MAcOS/Linux system).

Thanks for your work.

Kind regards
Thomas

I'm confused beacuse you mentioned raid before, but you appear to only have a single disk setup with no raid. Have this changed since you originally reported the bug?

Sorry Phillip,

I apparently was to eager to answer you immediately and I did not excute
your test on the correct machine apparently. I'm currently away from
home for one week. I'll check back on the RAID machine ASAP.

Please note the the workaround of Liny works fine, adding the part_msdos module does save me (and this raid machine is BIOS, not EFI).

Thanks for your work.

And when you run grub-install, which device do you point it to?
