Bug Description
Hi,

Hi,
I use Ubunutu (not Kubuntu) and TeX. I have a complete TeX insatallation from TeXLive CD. I'd like to use kile, but:
1) Installing kile adds too much: I want to install kile, and nothing but kile, but the package manager insists I install its teTeX. I don't need this teTeX, although many people might. In fact adding teTeX just adds extra work for me to remove it. Can you provide a version of kile which only adds kile, and nothing else?
2) Installing kile adds too little: kile depends on other programs to do a lot of its work: it needs an engine to compile tex to dvi, ps pdf or whatever, a viewer to display dvi, ps pdf or whatever, and so on. The installed version of kile is configured to use kdvi to view dvi files, and acroread to view pdf files, and probably kghostview to view ps files. AFAIK the standard Ubuntu installation includes xdvi *not* kdvi, xpdf *not* acroread. If the package manager is going to insist on installing tetex why not also insist on installing kdvi and acroread too?
Its up to you guys to work out what the best poilcy here is, but the current kile package seems to get it wrong, one way or the other.
Cheers,
Neil

About:
'1) Installing kile adds too much'
I think this point as invalid. Everyone
can install it's own version of a soft-
ware. Following your argumentation mean
that any 'dependency' is optional. This
makes no sense.
for special cases like yours one can
a) download the source and remove the
tetex-bin depencency and rebuild
b) installing equivs pkg and create
a dummy tetex-bin to satiesfy dependencies
'2) Installing kile adds too little'
kile recommends kdvi and kghostview.
Using aptitude, the pkgs would have been
installed by default. Using apt it
would told you that it's recommended
to install them.
Because there are alternatives available
(xdvi, gv. etc.) and there availibilty
is not essential, IMHO the recommends is okay.
Depends would be too strong.
I suggest to close this report as invalid.
