Unable to open update manager or synaptic

Bug Description

When I try to open Update Manager I get the following message: 'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_i18n_Translation-en, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
Cannot open Synaptic Package manager at all. Ubuntu Software Centre does not load properly

Thank you for your bug report.

Can you please try entering the following into a terminal:
sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/* -vf
