Bug Description

Binary package hint: amarok-xine

Since upgrading from Amarok 1.4.3 to 1.4.5, I hear a crackling sound during playback of various MP3 podcasts. It starts about a minute or so into playback, grows louder, and doesn't go away. Surprisingly, this does not happen when playing back MP3s ripped from CDs. The only difference I can think of is the bit rate.

I am using the Xine engine, and have tried various output plugins to no avail. For what it's worth, I'm using an ATI IXP SB400 AC'97 integrated audio controller on an HP laptop. The driver is just the default one that ships with Kubuntu Edgy.

I also have experienced a crackling of the sound in Amarok. Although, it happens with mp3s that have been ripped.

I'm using Feisty and my sound card is a VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97.

I would think it's an error of amarok-xine like you said.

Thanks for your reports. Do media players other than Amarok produce the same effect?

Also, please include the information requested from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSoundProblems as separate attachments.

Confirming, all but MPlayer. All mp3 files.

So if all media players but MPlayer are having this problem, it's not Amarok, it's the underlying engines. This report should go to the engine libraries used by Amarok, and whatever other libraries used in your testing of other media players.

Reassigning since it is not an Amarok bug.

Got this in everything, MPlayer Exaile Amarok. It appears that the lower the bitrate the worse this effect is (a 128k stream / MP3 is unbearable were as a 320k the crackle is hardly noticeable)
ATI SB450 HDA

All media plays perfect on other hardware

switching to libsdl-esd as advised here cured this for me

My understanding of the 100+ posts in the various duplicate reports is that the problem has been fixed in Intrepid or earlier.
