Bug Description

Using Oneiric Beta updated to 10th Sept with a dual screen setup in extended desktop mode if I click an indicator on the panel on one screen (calendar for example) then click again to clear it, then click the same indicator on the other panel then the area that the indicator dropdown occupied on the first screen is cleared to the background image. Other similar things happen in a less repeatable manner when using the indicators in dual screen mode.

I have discovered that this symptom only occurs when I have disabled compositing in Metacity using
gconftool --set --type bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager false
I have to do this in order to avoid the terminal window overlay bug #788607
Whether this bug should be marked invalid therefore depends on whether Unity-2d should be able to function correctly with compositing disabled. I leave that decision for someone who knows the answer to that question.

Thanks for the report Colin. I would love to see a screenshot of the issue. Also, we don't have the need nor the resources to support Unity 2D with compositing disabled.

I nearly did not report the bug as it appears only with compositing disabled, and will not object if it is marked invalid. However it seemed an odd symptom so I reported it in case it was indicative of an underlying problem. It is not a significant issue for me. The best solution would be if bug #788607 were fixed so that I can switch compositing back on :)

Alright, this is a known bug tracked back to the way X handles redirected windows that was deemed very tricky to fix (aside from enabling compositing). Sorry to give a bad news.

Changed in unity-2d:
status: New → Won't Fix
Changed in unity-2d (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid

For the record, on Precise Beta up to date 19th April 2012 this problem seems to have gone. In retrospect I think it stopped happening some time ago.
