Bug Description

Netbook: HP Mini 1120NR

After the screen is automatically turned off due to inactivity I am unable to get it to turn back on. Moving the mouse, clicking, and tapping keys do not turn the screen back on as expected. This is quite disheartening since the HP Mini 1120NR originally shipped with Ubuntu pre-loaded.

I know the system is up and running since I can login via SSH from remote. To get the screen back I have to cold reboot; I press the front power button and blindly hit Enter to select Shut Down (trying to reboot from remote via SSH results in a frozen system).

I encounter this on my HP Mini 1035NR as well, with the addition that the screen turns back on when the computer sleeps and then wakes from sleep mode. (For example, I have power manager set to sleep when the lid is closed, so it's almost a reasonable workaround).

Are you able to reproduce that, or do you definitely need a full restart for the screen to come back?

Seems rather an xorg issue. Do you get the same issue if you use dpms to turn off the screen? Could you add your Xorg.0.log after getting the issue?

I am experiencing this bug with my HP Compaq mini 110c-1101 netbook. I can also close my lid to cause the system to suspend, and then upon resume the screen will come back on.

Can also confirm it happens on a Dell Dimension B110 desktop when logged in. Doesn't seem to happen when logged out. Have to power down the hard way when it occurs as the system seems completely unresponsive.

Hey sciri,

Hi, thanks for reporting this issue during the development period of
Ubuntu.

I notice there's not been further comments to the bug report since the
release came out, would you mind updating us on the status of it in the
release?

Are you still able to reproduce the issue? If not, do you think the bug
report can be closed, or do you think we should continue tracking it?

I still notice the issue here, on a fully-updated HP Mini 110. Letting the screen turn off by itself seems to be what triggers it; it will turn back on from standby just fine. It also seems to go out if you plug in an external display and try to switch screens.

Additionally, I think that it may just be the backlight: if you hold a light up to the screen, you can see a faint image of your desktop. My current "solution" is to put the netbook in standby and bring it back again.
