Bad image quality in cheese

When using Cheese or gst-launch i get bad image quality with wrong colors, lines and stripes.
The problem is regardless of settings or resolution, in good light conditions. At the same time, guvcview and Google's chat plug in give me a perfectly fine picture.
I will add a sample picture in a follow up...

There is a bug #838739 that reports similar image quality problems but only at 1280x1024 whereas 640x480 image quality is fine.

I have tested my webcam with all the resolutions available and have found that only those resolutions above 640x480 exhibit image quality problems

This bug also affects my box:
The image quality is very fine with guvcview and VLC but is full of greenish scanlines when using skype or cheese.
