Bug Description

It seems kernel on Feisty Fawn does not power USB connected mobile phone like Edgy does.

I have Benq-Siemens EF81 mobile which has an USB cable to connect to computer. That cable then provides power for charging mobile. This is not the case in Feisty. There has never been any driver needed for that (like older Siemens which needed Prolific module).

Are you using a laptop or desktop?

If it is a laptop on battery then this could well be a power-manager issue. In that power-manager is conserving power for you to utilise your laptop.

It is a laptop which I use with battery removed (AC power only). With dapper and edgy (always latest kernels) it worked like it should.

USB power is managed by ACPI. Try the Feisty 1 Beta to be released on 3/22/2007. There may also be some motherboard jumpers that can have an affect.

With latest Feisty Beta, using kernel 2.6.20-13, the problem remains. Motherboard jumpers cannot be set in laptop!!

I'm having the same exact problem. I'm using and HP nc6230, and this neither works when running on AC or battery power. Very frustrating when you need to count on something like this.

Just to confirm that I have seen this problem on two of my machines, one Dell desktop and one ThinkPad laptop, both powered by AC, running kubuntun 7.04 and latest updates.

same problem here, tested on tow laptos and one desktop, all have the same problem, the desktop and one of the laptops have intel chipsets the other laptop has an AMD/ATI chipset... this is a very big problem for me because it makes difficult to use USB/serial adapters, some FTDI adapters get automatically disconnected after a few seconds when idle...

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

Hi Everyone,

Care to confirm this is still an issue with the latest Hardy Heron 8.04 release ? Subsequently if the issue still exists, care to test the latest Alpha for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex? Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

This seems hardware specific. From what other users tell me, newer computers tend not to produce this problem. However, the old notebook in use for testing when I reported this is no longer in use, so sorry I am not of much help.

What I can say is that there is a problem sometimes even with newer computers when the mobile is completely empty. I cannot, however, see any logic in when this happens and when it doesn't. It has nothing to do with the cable itself.

Please reopen this if it is still an issue in the actively developed pre-release of Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty . To reopen the bug report simply change the Status of the "linux" task back to "New".
