Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-6-generic

1. Everything works fine with kernel 2.6.19-7

2. If I boot with kernel 2.6.20-*-generic the boot works fine and in 2.6.20-5 the X-Server starts too (I'm using the nvidia-glx module, which doesn't work for 2.6.20-6 so far)

3. If I login on TTY1 and use some programs it works. (e.g. "su" or "ps")

4. If I use some other tools it doesn't work - they just start an nothing happens. (e.g. "sudo" or "ifconfig")

5. Some (I don't know how much) daemons does not start (e.g. "ssh" - same error)

6. In "ps" all these processes have the state "D+"

Can you provide the dmesg output and the output of lspci -nv for both the working 2.6.19-7 kernel and the 2.6.20-6 kernel.

The kernel is oopsing in the rtl8180 driver. Marking as a duplicate of #78255 [feisty] rtl8180 oops

Of possible interest is the driver is recognising the hardware differently between the kernel versions

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!
