Thanks for your bug report. Could you please also add the output of 'lspci -vvn' an 'lspci -vv' to your bug report if possible? Perhaps you could do this when booting the recovery kernel.

I have the same error in kern.log:

My laptop is HP Compaq nx6325 with AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-52.
But my Ubuntu (Feisty Herd 5) doesn't hang at bootup.

I think that this bug is the reason why my CPU sometimes runs on 100% speed even though none of the processes uses it so much.

The errors have disappeared !!

Here are the things I tried (i had been googling for so long i guess)

Suggestion 1: adding boot option "irqpoll"
Result: No effect

Suggestion 2: Check BIOS software with intel's (firmwarekit-r1.iso) linux
Result: No effect, 1 lousy warning, No Errors.

Suggestion 3: Related to Broadcom h/w
(no idea how to use that info)

My H/W was Toshiba Satellite Pro A120, BIOS version was 1.3,
I saw 2 updates available for A120 Series
1 update for PSAE0
1 update for PSAE1

I didn't know which model i had, PSAE0 or PSAE1
I used the BIOS UPDATE for PSAE1
http://support.toshiba-tro.de/tools/bios/tecra/a8/pta83/win/bios-330win.zip
updated the BIOS from windows.

Now i haven't received these errors yet !

will report back if problem persists,
I guess Toshiba BIOS drivers for windows worked around the BIOS bugs,
Linux did not have such luxury !

Toshiba Tecra A8-183. BIOS update to version 3.40 fixes this issue.

You must not update from Windows. Modify FreeDOS ISO image and add the unpacked Windows BIOS to it. When starting FreeDOS from CD you should be able to run CHGBIOSA.EXE. Input BIO0046T.COM when asked for the BIOS filename. Works flawlessly.

Am running latest gutsy on sempron 2800 on EP-8krai pro motherboard and nvidia geforce 6200. On both feisty and gutsy mouse and keyboard would appear to freeze randomly forcing me to reboot. Have changed from optical wheel mouse to old wired non optical ps2 mouse. Still problem. I noticed however that my syslog always had a series of lines before the crash which start with the wireless ones below then continue with a series of consequtive apic errors on cpu until freeze. Here is a sample of the lines:

Aug 29 12:45:56 cbahimsa-gutsy NetworkManager: <info> Updating allowed wireless network lists.
Aug 29 12:45:56 cbahimsa-gutsy NetworkManager: <WARN> nm_dbus_get_networks_cb(): error received: org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerInfo.NoNetworks - There are no wireless networks stored..
Aug 29 12:57:44 cbahimsa-gutsy kernel: [ 765.126842] APIC error on CPU0: 00(08)

Am now testing with noapic and nolapic in boot. I noticed from apic wikipedia that "It is also possible that I/O APIC causes problems with network interfaces based on via-rhine driver, causing a transmission time out."

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!
