Bug Description

System Settings->Shortcuts. The shortcuts do not respond when trying to edit a shortcut, nor is there any response when pressing Backspace to clear.
Problem is present in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot).

Unfortunately, there isn't enough information here for developers to fix your bug or even to reproduce it. Have you tried rebooting. Which keyboard shortcut in particular doesn't work?

Open System Settings and click Keyboard. Switch to the Shortcuts tab. Select a shortcut then click the shortcut (a second time) and type the keyboard combination or press Backspace to disable the shortcut.

I appreciate that there is insufficient information to attempt to fix the bug. I tried your suggestions, without any success. As I said in my earlier bug report, "The shortcuts do not respond when trying to edit a shortcut, nor is there any response when pressing Backspace to clear." This includes all the keyboard shortcut options, they are all locked.
So as you can see from my earlier bug report I tried using Backspace, but this did not reset the keys.

Yes I did click on the right column.
There is a similar problem, which may be another manifestation of the same bug.
As an alternative to setting the keyboard shortcuts from System Settings->Shortcut, I installed CompizConfig SettingsManager, ticked on 'Commands' installed a command on 'Command line 0' set the 'Key Bindings' and selected the key combination to run the shortcut. Now I am using this technique on Ubuntu 11.04 to run 8 shortcut commands, and this work perfectly.
I used the same approach in Ubuntu 11.04, but was unable to get the shortcut to work. I identified this problem. Each time a key command was run, 'Use This Plugin->Enable Commands' checkbox was unticked. No mater how many times I clicked the text box, as soon as I tried to run the Command line shortcut, the text box was unchecked.
Please advise whether this should be reported as a separate bug.

should have read

Colin, we'd like to fix this bug but the problem is that Keyboard Shortcuts works for us and you haven't given a series of steps where you can show how it doesn't work. Here's a couple suggestions:

1. Try from an Oneiric live CD.

2. Or run unity --reset . This will reset all of your Compiz & Unity settings back to the defaults. I don't think this is a problem with the default install but perhaps you've set a conflicting setting in CCSM. CCSM is not supported with Unity, in the sense that it offers easy access to way too many ways to break Unity. A simpler Unity configurator addon is talked about but it would take someone to code it.

Thanks for the advice. I ran 'unity --reset' and was able to install keyboard shortcuts without any problem.

My thanks to yourself and everybody else who came forward to offer advice and help.
