Bug Description

At least this appears to be the case. Perhaps it is just poor wording - in the 'Screen' settings there is a checkbox saying 'Dim screen to save power' that apparently does nothing when ticked. Does it really mean 'Dim screen to save power when the computer is idle and on battery'?

Jason, do you think that's the sort of option we should aim to get back by default?

Could someone please explain the meaning/purpose of 'Dim screen to save power'? This bug's reporter says that it doesn't have any effect on screen dimming when on idle and on battery. I can also confirm this behaviour. However, in bug 844241, the screen is dimmed but isn't restored on activity but the dimming doesn't occur if the checkbox isn't checked. That bug is also reported against Oneiric.

Would this mean that there are two bugs on screen dimming: one/this bug about dimming not working at all with misleading description for the checkbox and the second one about broken brightness restoring on activity after idle? Or should the misleading description moved to a new bug?

right, that's what it's meant to do, do you still get the issue?

@papukaija
I've just updated bug 844241, because I've seen that it does not depend on 'Dim screen to save power': simply the backlight is not restored when I move the mouse...

The "dim screen brightness when idle and [alredy] on battery" works on my system but I'm leving this bug incomplete since the original reporter hasn't yet commented and there seems to be some HW specific issues with the screen brightness functions ( see for example bug 844241 and bug 810093).
