Bug Description

I used update-manager -d to upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 beta1. Near the end of the upgrade I received a message that ubuntu-desktop failed to upgrade. A few seconds later I got another message saying that the system had been upgraded but some packages failed and the system might be unstable. Upon rebooting, the system is ruined. The desktop will load, but nothing works. When something is clicked on the side menu, it opens (though very transparent) but disappears as soon as I try to click anything. Desktop icons come up through the launcher menu (which also does nothing). After the desktop is loaded for ~30 seconds, I get a popup asking to send a bug report. When I click to allow, it asks for my password but as soon as I put in my password the same popup shows up again and again without actually reporting anything. Absolutely nothing on the desktop works. I can't even logout/shutdown. Ended up having to kill the power manually. The system is completely unusable.

Thank you for taking the time to improve Ubuntu. Could you please attach the output of the /var/log/dist-upgrade folder?

You could also try running in a terminal sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade, to see if that helps, as Oneiric is constantly improving.
