kernel segfault during upgrade from Natty to Oneiric

performing 'update-manager -d' It processed for an hour, went to sleep, I woke it up and authorized changes for LIGHTGDM and PREY config files, then the update-manager gui simply disappeared. No error messages were displayed. Syslog tail:

This bug caused my upgrade from natively installed 11.04 to 11.10 to fail. It seemed to eventually complete (I may have run update-manager -d again), but in general 11.10 has been pretty buggy but I don't have concrete reason to think it was related to this crash.
