Bug Description

This is an up-to-date Lucid on an Asus M2N68-AM Plus.

With the stock Firefox (3.6.21), when http://www.new7wonders.com/image-gallery?id=21&post_id=5077 is opened, cpu load increases significantly, mouse pointer movement becomes jerky and finally the system freezes. Sometimes (maybe 1/3 of freezes) the display also goes black. At this point Alt+PrtScr+REISUB works but nothing else. On the M2N68-AM Plus this seems to happen every time, whereas on my other system (an ancient Shuttle, a SS56G I think) it never happens (though the page still does burn cpu quite heavily).

I tried older release kernels down to 2.6.32-27, and Ubuntu 2.6.32-40.87-generic, the issue remained.

I also tried disabling Flash, and the issue remained.

I'm attaching an apport, and a syslog that says the Oops is because "unable to handle kernel paging request". This leads me to suspect this might be the same issue as Bug #834629, but as the circumstances do differ significantly, I decided to report this separately.

I just gave the current 12.04 Beta a spin and am happy to report that the issue seems to have been fixed there.

I just tested kernel 3.0.0, and although the issue went away, this didn't reveal as much as it could have, because I had to run GDM in safe mode.

Timothy, does your harware setup match? You're using the internal Nvidia graphics and not an add-on card?

No, I have an Intel i7-930 CPU, Asus PX58D-E motherboard and an Nvidia GTX 480 discrete GPU.

All I did was test to see if I had any problems while visiting the webpage you mentioned on my system, to see if the issue was more widespread and possible to replicate.

Thanks for your input Timothy, I'll have to see if I can reproduce this using a 11.04 live disc.

I couldn't, and neither could I with a 10.10 live, so it's possibly something that's changed going from 10.04 to 10.10. I also tried Chromium and Firefox 6 under 10.04; with Firefox 6 the issue persists, whereas with Chromium I can't reproduce it. There's of course a more serious bug underlying the browser, as no application issue should bring the entire system to its knees.

(I just realized I used amd64 live discs in the tests whereas the installed 10.04 is an x86 system. Perhaps it makes no difference but I'll leave judging that to experts.)

I'll gladly execute more tests if anyone has ideas how to narrow this down even more.

Jani Uusitalo, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

I cannot get X working with the latest Mainline build for Lucid (2.6.35-rc1-lucid [1]) nor with linux-image-generic-lts-backport-maverick (which I figured I'd also try, as it's also a build of 2.6.35). Both end with "[drm] failed to open device" and "No devices detected" in the log (I'll attach one to this comment).

If I'm interpreting Nouveau Wiki's Troubleshooting document [2] and the logs correctly, KMS is working (fb0 is there), which means there's "a version mismatch between the Nouveau DRM and libdrm". Any help there would (also) be appreciated.

Jani Uusitalo, thank you for trying to test the mainline kernel. We have the apport information for Lucid from when you first reported this bug. If it remains an issue in the development release, could you run in this release the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

Ah, sorry about that, I thought you wanted both updated logs from Lucid *and* tests with newer versions.

I just gave the current 12.04 Beta a spin and am happy to report that the issue seems to have been fixed there: despite my best efforts I couldn't make it crash with the gallery site. It did remain somewhat sluggish to browse but the Oops never occurred.
