New locale request for Occitan

Hello,

I'm the Occitan translation coordinator for Ubuntu (and others) and we have a little problem: Occitan is a Romance language spoken in Occitania (i.e. Southern France, Monaco and some valleys of Italy and Spain). All of its subdivisions are generally mutually intelligible but different enough to deserve separate translations. Right now, we are translating in Lengadocian (main subdivision) but some translators would be interested in translating in Gascon (which is very different from Lengadocian).
The ISO code (639-2) is "oci" now but an ISO code (639-3) make it possible to separate the different Occitans (lnc for Lengadocian and gsc for Gascon for example). Would it be possible to use it so as to make better work ?

This will require that we prepare language pack scripts to generate the old lang code for releases < Feisty so we can rename it in Launchpad.

Another approach would be to support a way to have different language codes depending on distro releases inside Launchpad... but I think this is more hard to achieve.

What do you think about this Martin?

Carlos, what do you mean with 'old lang code'? did the locale name change during Feisty?

What I mean is that old language code 'oc' becomes now 'oci'. If we do the rename in Launchpad, it will affect future updates of Dapper and Edgy so I'm suggesting to rename any 'oci.po' file for those distroreleases to 'oc.po' as a workaround to the limitation in Launchpad.

Anyway, I'm not sure whether we have time to fix this for Feisty...

If not fixed for Feisty, it's not a shame. If it were fixed for next release (I don't know the name after Feisty), it would be great :o)

Carlos, we do not have files 'oc.po', we have oc/<domain>.po. So we would need to teach langpack-o-matic to install the oci ones into the -oc langpack. However, if there are multiple variants this would conflict, so I'd rather not do it for stable releases.

So if you rename the locale in Launchpad, then Hardy would get a new set of langpacks (-oci), while stables wouldn't get any further updates (which is something we could live with).

I must confess I don't understand :-(

I've had no Occitan translation update for ages whereas I make some translations, are you sure Occitan is in langpack-o-matic?

Until now, no other Occitan was begun translating so I think we could keep that for later if you don't mind, when someone with a different Occitan than the one in Launchpad arrives.

Martin, If no one objects that, I'm fine to go with the rename and stop getting translation updates for previous Ubuntu releases, so only Hardy and newer will get updates for Occitan.

Yanning, if it's wrong, we should fix it as soon as possible, when it's 'easy' to fix, if we leave it for later, there will be more packages or projects using oc.po instead of oci.po and that will make any fix more difficult...

I do agree too to rename oc into oci from now on. Should I ask the same for GNOME and KDE?

We should rename 'oc' language to 'oci' once all upstreams have been fixed first. Please let us know when at least major upstreams like GNOME and KDE have switched to a new code.
