Bug Description

Updating to 11.10 beta 1 failed during the "calculating the changes" step, following window popped up

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.

I initially updated from 11.04 to 11.10 with no problem at all. So I then decided to do a fresh install to see how that would go and that's when I had the same problem you are having. I am now unable to update because of it.

I got around this issue by opening the terminal and typing sudo apt-get update then sudo apt-get -u upgrade.

I did not change anything and tried the upgrade again and I worked.

I could solve this problem by inspecting the file /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log.

I could see there at the last lines that the culprit for the unmet dependencies was "gcc-4.4". I uninstalled buil-essential and gcc-4.4 and now the error is gone and the upgrade has proceeded normally. I will reinstall when I finish upgrading.

Marking the bug as "invalid", feel free to reopen it if it is really a bug and not something which was misconfigured in my system.

Got the same issue and removing packages "build-essential" and "gcc-4.4" worked for me too.
