when number of buttons exceeds display size there is no way to access the last buttons.
please add add an overflow behavior (like unity launcher?) An overlay indicator like the ios scrollbars would be nice if possible.
if you like i could make a mockup.

Yes, please. Do a mockup. I'm not familiar with ios scrollbars. Unity launcher (3d) overflow behavior should be a bit hard to do in 2d without big slowdowns.

Here are three ideas. The first shows a scrollbar which indicates how many buttons are off the screen by its size.
The scrollbar is hidden until hover over the dock.

Pros: looks nice, easy to use with a mouse, self explained
Cons: hard to use with touch pad, macish?, not DBX like (the icons change their position), is it even possible to make?

second mock-up shows the AWN behavior.
arrows are showing that buttons are off the screen. hover or click on the arrows to scroll the dock up or down.

Pros: easy to implement, ...
Cons: slow, long mouse ways (to scroll back you have to go to the opposite screen direction), boring?, not DBX like (see ^)

The third shows the ios home-screen behavior.
instead of expanding vertically the icons that are to much are creating a new column (page) parallel to the current one.

Pros: easy to implement(?), looks nice, short mouse ways, many ways to use (scrolling, clicking, swiping?), more like DBX (the order isn't changed, the first app is still the first just on another page, just scroll or assign a mouse button and go down to the application you want. muscle memory still there?) assigning dbx features could expand its functionality (hello omni button https://blueprints.launchpad.net/dockbar/+spec/all-windows-button)

Cons: hard to use with touch pads?, macish, still not 100% DBX like, needs explanation? ...

This is a needed feature. Without this, there is no easy way to access the other buttons.
The ideas above looks better to me (esp. the third one in the above comment0
