The error message is generated when Viper first tries to plot the data as a MeshFunction. Fixing the bug would require some code refactoring in Viper + some work on DOLFIN XML I/O for MeshFunction. We have been discussing adding a native plotter to DOLFIN to replace Viper so I won't fix this now.
