Bug Description

****SYNC INFO****

I have tested building and running ceph 0.34-1 on an up to date Oneiric amd64 machine. Upstream has pointed out that the version in the archive now does not work well with the 3.0 kernel, while this new version does.

*****************

The current version of Ceph (http://ceph.newdream.net) is pretty outdated.

The included version is currently 0.27, where the project has already reached 0.34.

The kernel client from Ceph is included in the kernel, so that is working out well.

For the upcoming LTS we want to include a more recent version of Ceph which is tested that it works with the code shipped with the new LTS so that users can have the best "Ceph experience" possible.

I'd volunteer to get this testing started as soon as the first alpha's of 12.04 start showing up (we have to wait for 11.10 first!)

Wido, Ceph is still unseeded in universe, so I'm not averse to submitting a feature freeze exception and getting 0.34 included with 11.10. Better that a more current version is available in 11.10 than have it magically arrive in 12.04 on release day. Ideally we would be syncing it from Debian, but I will be happy to sponsor work to update to 0.34 in Ubuntu first if you have time to put together an updated package and add a feature freeze exception to this bug:

Ceph is already building their own packages for Ubutu Oneiric, they can be found at: http://ceph.newdream.net/debian

So I would like to request a FreezeException for Ceph for the upcoming 11.10 release.

The current included version of Ceph is 0.27, that is an outdated version which will not work seamlessly with the kernel client included in the kernel of 11.10 (3.0). The current version of Ceph (0.34) works much better with the 3.0 kernel.

By upgrading the included packages in 11.10 to a descent version we (the Ceph project) would like to have a even better version of Ceph included in 12.04, which is going to be a new LTS.

The impact is minimal, upgrading from 0.27 to 0.34 goes pretty smooth, but Ceph is still under development, so users get the best experience possible by using the latest version.

All other component needed by Ceph (like btrfs) are already included in Ubuntu, so I don't see any obstacles including 0.34 in 11.10.

Sounds plausible, and no reverse dependencies. Please go ahead, thanks!

Great! What steps do we need to go through to get a recent version of Ceph into OneIric? The packages are available from: http://ceph.newdream.net/debian

The preferable approach would be to get 0.34 in Debian, and sync from there. Have you contacted the debain maintainers? http://packages.qa.debian.org/c/ceph.html

It seems that Laszlo (debian maint) has already a newer version ready in Debian: http://ftp-master.debian.org/new.html

At the moment the package is 13 hours old, so it could be that he read this bugreport and started working on it.

Could this be reviewed for the upcoming LTS (12.04) again? Currently Ceph 0.39 is out, but the project is moving pretty fast in a good direction.

Users of Ubuntu would get the best experience if a more recent version (Like the upcoming 0.40) was included in 12.04.

Wido: Firstly, an old, Fix Released sync request bug is not the place to discuss this (stick your nose into #ubuntu-motu on IRC, or mail ubuntu-devel-discuss for questions like this).

0.39 is not packaged yet in Debian yet, so we can't do a sync. Please poke the Debain maintainer.

CEPH is set to be submitted for main in 12.04.

Also, we will likely ship 0.40 in 12.04... There is a blueprint to
track the work going on to get it ready.
