Mind you, it _WOULD_ be nice to find the kernel bug or whatever it is that
causes random SIGILL's from time to time...

Looks like it was nothing but a temporary issue on the buildd. Sjoerd
managed to build it on powerpc without such a problem, and uploaded the
package.

powerpc kernels sometimes throw SIGILL for no good reason.

This bug apparently causes powerpc build failures on a regular basis, and needs
to be tracked down. It may or may not be a kernel isssue, but it is the only
starting point we have; Herbert, what information can we try to collect to track
this down? It's annoyingly unreproducible.

Is it possible that this is another ppc-kernel-on-ppc64-hardware bug?

No - Debian's buildd is a G4.

hmmi i really start to believe this problem is gcc related.

since last gcc update on davis/breezy chroot, i can easily get 5 to 10 FTBFS in
one kernel
build run (that i know to be a good kernel). stuff that clearly i was not
getting before.

This appears to be fixed. I cannot reproduce any such SIGILL on either of my ppc's.

This has never been reproducible on demand, but it was happening regularly on
our buildds. It was rumoured that using a powerpc64 kernel would fix it; was
that done?

ppc64 kernels on davis and the buildds seem to have cleared up the issue, though
if that was really the fix (or maybe just upgrading to a newer upstream kernel
source did it, and ppc32 vs ppc64 was a red herring), I can't say for sure.
Either way, this seems to be resolved in breezy.
