In precise beta 2 with all updates as of today, totem fails to read some mp4 videos (although not all). It does not crash but shows a black screen.
totem-video-thumbnailer launched on those files aborts with

totem-video-thumbnailer couldn't process file: 'Trotro et le potager.mp4'
Reason: Took too much time to process.

Everything was working fine in 11.10 and Nautilus showed all thumbnails correctly

I'll add that the mp4 files that totem seems unable to read are files downloaded from youtube using Minitube.

Steps to reproduce:
- open minitube
- search for a video
- download it
- open the downloaded file with totem / run totem-video-thumbnailer on the file
- check that the file is readable with vlc/smplayer

I'm not sure it should be a whishlist as the feature worked without problems in 11.10, so it's a regression.

I confirm this annoying regression.
I can only read mp4 and other formats with VLC.

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal).

Just deleted the ~/.thumbnails folder and it forced it to reload the icons and they're all showing now as they should maybe that can help others

Same issue here (ubuntu 12.04).
Bypassed using ffmpegthumbnailer:

1. sudo apt-get install ffmpegthumbnailer
2. sudo cp /usr/share/thumbnailers/totem.thumbnailer ~/totem.thumbnailer .bak
3. sudo gedit /usr/share/thumbnailers/totem.thumbnailer
4. replace the text with this one:

[Thumbnailer Entry]
TryExec=/usr/bin/ffmpegthumbnailer
Exec=/usr/bin/ffmpegthumbnailer -s %s -i %i -o %o -c png -f

6. delete all folders in ~/.thumbnails;
7. restart nautilus.
