Bug Description

As you can see in the attached screenshot, there are no accounts listed in the Online Accounts part of the GNOME Control Center shipped in Oneiric. I currently have a number of Chat and Gwibber accounts set up and working well, so those accounts should be visible. When I try to add an account by clicking the + button it only shows Google as a provider.

thanks, that's just what the GNOME guys did this cycle, it let you configure google account and let evolution, empathy etc use those for email, contacts, calendar. They don't support any non google account type for 3.2

Thanks for the response, Seb. I guess the real bug here then is in populating the dialog box to be more intuitive that an account needs to be added.

I think this uncovers a design issue in Ubuntu. We now have three different ways of configuring user accounts:

 * Messaging and VoIP Accounts - Empathy accounts.
 * Online Accounts - Evolution / Empathy.
 * User Accounts - system accounts.

We also have Broadcast Accounts available to be configured in Gwibber, but this is not exposed in the System Settings and Email can't be configured outside of apps (e.g. Thunderbird).

I filed the design issue for this bug at https://bugs.launchpad.net/indicator-session/+bug/834830

You can add ubuntuone-control-panel to the list as well

If Ubuntu is going to switch to Thunderbird as the default mail client in Oneiric, I think we either need to remove the Online Accounts capplet, or include the necessary infrastructure to allow Thunderbird to link to Google contacts and calendars. Otherwise, it just appears broken when a user adds their Google Account information and nothing happens in Thunderbird.

Also, the VoIP and Messaging Accounts capplet should be removed or folded into the Online Accounts capplet, IMHO.

Ok, adding an upstream component because upstream could do a better job at hinting on what the dialog is for and what the user needs to do

Ubuntu is fixing this in Quantal with the ubuntu-online-accounts project
