Unity/Compiz uses ~25% CPU with only a Terminal open (power regression)

Compiz uses a crazy amount of CPU, continiously, even with nothing showing except the Launcher and a terminal:

the side-effect of this is that the machine runs extremely hot, and battery life is impacted. Compiz used less CPU/energy in Ubuntu 11.04 so this is a regression.
