I installed gnome 3 and after uninstalling using ppa purge it resulted in this error

Same here, also after removing Gnome3.

User named bhaskar used sudo dpkg -P to remove conflicting packaged and everything went fine, however this does not work for me.

thank you for your bug report but downgrading from unofficial ppa is not supported and not a distribution bug, you can probably workaround it by reinstallaing the oneiric gnome-icon-theme version
