can't open empathy chat windows

as of relatively recently in oneiric, empathy chat dialogs no longer open.

double clicking a contact in the contact list opens a gnome-shell message tray bubble, but clicking on that bubble doesn't open an empathy chat dialog.

there appears to be no way to enter a group chat, and clicking on room -> group chat name does nothing.

I am experiencing this bug in Oneiric and it is very annoying. It's making Empathy impossible to use.

I have this bug intermittently too on 11.10. Any known workarounds?

Going offline (with all accounts) usual fix the problem.

I am experiencing this bug, and it's worth noting that while I can't initiate text chats with anyone, I also can't receive them. There's no feedback from Empathy that I'm receiving messages, while there is in Pidgin.
